Review Big – Lush

Dakboerin

Dakboerin is an initiative by Annelies Kuiper.  Dakboerin is working with residents, schools, offices and restaurants to build rooftop kitchen gardens in areas where growing space is scarce. A rooftop kitchen garden has a lot of advantages. it provides a good isolation, rainwater capture, living space for birds and insects and of course you can get nice food from your rooftop. Annelies was always interested in sustainable living and organic food, but when she read an article in Green Amsterdam, she really wanted to explore urban agriculture. This because ground is scarce, but there are enough rooftops! Dakboerin works together with experts during the construction — calculating building materials, applying for planning permits, and designing hives and chicken coups. Dakboerin won second prize in the Biodiversity Innovation category at the New Venture Business Plan competition in London last month.

Dakboerin is a very good initiative because it uses unused spaces and it makes the city greener. It is also very good for the environment because now it wont take lots of kilometers to get the food to their destination. Also the rooftop itself has a lot of advantages I told about above.

Trees as streetlights

What it is:

A group of scientist in Taiwan recently discovered a way to let trees glow. By placing gold nano particles within the leaves of trees, they will give off a red glow. They infused the leaves of Bacopa Caroliniana. The scientists call this bio-LED. The bio-LED could be used for lighting the road for passersby without the need for electric power.

Why it’s cool:

Using trees to replace street lights would save on electricity costs and cut CO2 emissions, but it could also reduce light pollution in major cities. This idea is related to the trend nature city balance, because the street lights will look very natural this way. This idea is also related to the trend sustainability because it will cut CO2 emissions.

Tubohotel

Architects t3arc have created 20 rooms made from recycled concrete pipes. The hotelconcept is called Tubohotel. This idea is inspired by dasparkhotel, a concept in Germany. The concept was based on the fact that t3arc saw a need of low priced spaces that were eco-responsible and they saw a need for the use of wast materials for construction. The rooms include a queen-size bed, desk light and fan and there is space under the bed for some storage.  The Tubohotel is located in the Magic Village of Tepoztlan.  It’s about 45 minutes of mexico city. The rooms are priced $42 a night, they hope the price will attract backpackers and people who are looking for an alternative and unique accommodation. For bathroom facilities there are two communal bath houses with private showers.

This concept is related to the trend sustainability, because the use wast materials for construction. This concept is also related to the trend experience economy, because it is an alternative way of camping.

Green Replay store

This is a project of a new Replay concept store in Florence. The garden is designed by vertical garden design. A company that is specialised in vertical gardens, if you want to know how vertical gardens work and if you want to see more of their projects you should watch their site. During this project they were collaborating with architects of Studio 10 The garden is inspired by the plants that can be found in the lower parts of the hills, near behind Florence.

This store is related to the trend nature city balance. Because most people in the world are very rushed, they want to create spaces where they can relax. Nature is an important element for a lot of people to relax. This store shows the need for more green.

Coolhunt sustainability #5.4 Hanging gardens

What it is:

Hanging gardens are handbags filled up with plants. Ýou can easily decorate your balcony with these hanging gardens. The handbags are made of biological cotton. The concept of the hanging garden is made by az&mut

Why it’s cool:

Now you can easily decorate your balcony and its also very fashionable to use these handbags. The handbags are made biological so that means that this is a good environmental choise. An other good thing about these ‘hanging gardens’ is that you prevent excess packaging, wich is very good for the environment.

Coolhunt sustainability #5.3 The green fashion competition

What it is:

Amsterdam International Fashion Week and the Dutch ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) have launched a competition, because of the international Year of Biodiversity. This competition is called: The Green Fashion Competition. The goal of the competition is to find talented designers who can create a fashion business while saving biodiversity. The entrepreneurs need to find a balance between the economical, ecological and social impact of their ideas; a balance between People, Planet and Profit. The winner of the competition gets €25000,- And the winner is… Elsien Gringhuis

why it’s cool:

You can see people want to be greener, be better for the world. With this kinds of competitions they want to keep people motivated to think of new green ideas, ideas that make the world a little better.

#5.1 levi’s water<less

What it is:

Levi’s has developed a jeans that reduce the amount of water while making the jeans. The reduce can be up to 96% off the normal process.

Why it’s cool:

one out of six people on the planet do not have enough water to drink, but the people who have don’t think about those people. They take their clean water for granted.  An average pair of levi’s jeans needs 42 liters of water to be dyed, washed and finished. That’s quite a lot and when people wash their jeans it costs 21 liters every time you wash. Levi’s want to reduce the amount of water while making the jeans and bring a message out, they want people to be more conscious about their use of water. Actually they are responding to the trend sustainability, but by making a huge campaign out of it you also could say that it are trend setters for other brands are for their customers to be more conscious. By buying a waterless levi’s jeans you are making a step in the right direction. Water needs to be saved, especially when it is so possible!

on the movie below you can see how this jeans is made

#5.6 Walk-in-Garden

What it is:

In Paris there are a couple of places where transparent bubbles are installed. These are the products of the campaign: Ma bulle, ma plante et moi.  Inside these bubbles you can see a wide variety of indoor plants and flowers. This festival was created by the Dutch flower council. Each bubble has like 60 m² of garden in it.  This is just enough space for two people at the time. There 16 bubbles in 4 different settings.

Why it is cool:

This campaign is very cool, because there is a lot of urbanisation at the moment, and people will forget how important nature is. Just sneaking into this garden for a couple of minutes can fresh up your day. You can enter this bubble with a maximum of two persons so this is a very private sphere and experience. You can place this in the nature city balance trend.

Coolhunt 1.4 Grass sculptures

What it is:

These sculptures are made of recycled metal soil and grass seeds. It is inspired by mother nature and the food cycle. He conveys the idea that these are what shapes the physical. These sculptures are made by Mathilde Roussel-Giraudy.

Why it’s cool:

These sculptures are very cool because you can use them as a decoration of your garden. But it is also very cool to know the message, because in this time of life the most people are very rushed and don’t have time to enjoy nature. With this sculpture it will remind people that nature is relaxing and very important for a human being.
